Varsity Football: Time Management wins 'The Duel'

Roger Bacon 34 Mt. Healthy 32
The Roger Bacon Spartans took the field for the Local 12 Skyline Chili Game of Week against Mt. Healthy, and it was quite the duel. By the looks of the score people would think that it was a shootout, but the numbers tell another story. Both teams first possession required both defenses to punt which really sent a signal to what the rest of the game was going to look like
Late in the 1st quarter, Mt. Healthy's defense forced another punt which was later blocked . The blocked punt allowed Mt Healthy to get on the board early (0-7).... but the fun didn't end there. Early in the 2nd quarter, Roger Bacon finally got on the board with a Solomon Tentman 24 yard touchdown run, which knotted up the score(7-7)....but

Mt. Healthy came right back with their running game. Quarterback(MH) Denzel Larkin's 24 yard touchdown run at the 2 minute mark in the 2nd quarter, looked like the 'definitive statement' heading into halftime....until they missed the point after(7-13)...
And that missed point-after-attempt later would play a key part in this game

With 2:33 left on the clock in the 1st Half, Junior Tanner Sprong(RB) hit up Senior Josh Ungerbuehler(RB) for a 4 yd. td pass(14-13) and later Josh hit up Jake Rose(RB) for a 9 yd. td pass(21-13).

At the start of 3rd Quarter with a two possession lead, Tanner Sprong and Jake Rose went back to work. Tanner sent a 40-yard bomb to Jake Rose to really open up the game. 27-13. After a 2o point run... Mt Healthy found themselves back into the game with great defense. Mark Cornist(MH) returned a 50-yard pick (interception) and 2 minutes later Devin Brown(MH) returned a 62-yard punt both for touchdowns(27-25)... and we officially had a 'duel' at 'Bron Bacevich Stadium'.
Late in the 3th quarter, it took another Sprong touchdown pass to put the Spartans up two possessions... but The Owls of Mt. Healthy kept clawing back. Denzel Larkin kept Mt. Healthy in the game with another rushing touchdown which pulled the Owls within 2 points(34-32). In the end it wasn't enough because Coach Kevin Huxel's brilliant use of time management forced the Owls to call timeouts, which lead the Spartans to constantly run the ball, to 'finally' end what will go down as a classic.

I talked to Coach Kevin Huxel on the Subway Fresh Take-Hotline and he discussed how he loved the way we used the clock as a factor in the game. -Besides the turnovers. He really loved the way the Spartans battled through adversity to capture the win in the environment 'under the lights'.- We also joked how he's just now eating Friday's dinner. Hilarious. The win must have been enough to swallow. Good Win Coach. Next Game @ Cambell County 7:30pm est.
